Lee McCarthy

PRESIDENT / FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEER

Lee McCarthy is a licensed, professional engineer and a certified fire investigator with experience in fire and explosion investigation, fire protection engineering, and fire science. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with B.S. in Civil Engineering, Lee went on to earn a M.S. in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland, completing his thesis research on fire fighter protective clothing with the Fire Fighting Technology Research Group at NIST. He has experience working with nationally recognized private fire protection and forensic engineering firms, as well as premier U.S. Government fire research facilities. Lee provides clients with expert consultation regarding origin and cause determination, fire protection and alarm systems, life safety, fire dynamics, fire testing, fire and risk assessment, as well as compliance with codes and standards. His experience includes numerous fire and explosion investigations involving commercial, industrial, and agricultural facilities as well as vehicles and residences.
 

For four and a half years of his career, Lee had the unique opportunity to gain experience in fire research and investigation at the world's largest fire investigation research laboratory, ATF’s Fire Research Laboratory. During this time, Lee designed and conducted custom experiments to answer complex questions in the areas of heat transfer, ignition, flammable vapor migration, flame spread, fire growth, fire dynamics, and the effects of ventilation and fire flow paths. He was also a member of ATF’s National Response Team responding to major fires throughout the United States. During his time with ATF, the investigations Lee was involved in were significant due to the scale and value of loss -- including multi-million dollar losses and fires with multiple fatalities.
